Anesthesia Patient Safety Program 2021: A Review of Closed Claims

Utilizing OMSNIC closed-case examples, a panel comprised of practicing OMSs and an attorney will illustrate patient safety and risk management principles for the administration of office-based anesthesia.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain the components - including age, physical status/airway assessment, medical and dental history and medications - used in the patient selection process to determine candidates for in-office administration of anesthesia. 
  2. Discuss emergency management planning and preparedness for the OMS practice team. 
  3. Apply the principles of patient safety and risk management, including the use of equipment and documentation of the patient experience in the clinical setting.

Dr. Anthony M. Spina is a practicing oral and maxillofacial surgeon in the Chicago metropolitan area. He completed his undergraduate education and received his dental degree from Loyola University of Chicago. He completed his residency and obtained his medical degree from State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. Dr. Spina was on the faculty of the University of Kentucky’s OMS residency program for two years. He has been certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He served for seven years on the Illinois State Board of Dentistry and was Chair of this board in his final year. He has served on several committees of the OMSF and served on the OMSF Board of Directors from 2012 to 2016. He received the OMFS Ambassador Award in 2010 and the OMSF Torch Award in 2018. Dr. Spina has been a delegate or alternate delegate to the AAOMS House of Delegates since 2005. He has served on several AAOMS committees and was named AAOMS Committee Person of the Year in 2013. Dr. Spina has been a member of the North East Regional Dental Board and has served on several NERB committees. Dr. Spina was a member of OMSNIC’s Advisory Board for five years. He has been a Director of OMSNIC since 2013 and of Fortress beginning in 2016. He has also served as a Director of The River Agency since 2016.

Cynthia Trentacosti, DDS, MS has provided Oral and Maxillofacial care to the Chester County residents since 1994. She earned her undergraduate degree in biology at Ursinus College and her dental degree at the Medical College of Virginia. She received her training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio at which time she also received a masters in science. Dr. Trentacosti earned her board certification in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1996 and re-certifies with the board yearly . She is also boarded by the National Board of Dental Anesthesia.
Dr. Trentacosti is active in local and regional oral and maxillofacial surgery societies. She has served as president of both the Delaware Valley Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Pennsylvania Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. She currently serves as chair of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons’ Committee on Governmental Affairs and is a member/ speaker for OMSNIC /patient safety and risk management committee.
Dr. Trentacosti’s special interest in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery include adult and pediatric anesthesia. Due to this interest, she has been an active participant in developing statewide guidelines for anesthesia services provided by oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the state of Pennsylvania. She also acts on behalf of the state board of dentistry and the Pennsylvania Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as an evaluator of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and their office and staff within the state of Pennsylvania, who provide IV sedation or general anesthesia to their patients.
Dr. Trentacosti also enjoys the practice of dental implants and bone grafting. She attends continuing education courses regularly to provide optimal surgical care to her patients, which include the most current treatment options available.
Dr. Trentacosti resides in Kennett Square with her husband and their two children.

Dr. Anderson maintains private practice locations in Indianapolis, Indiana and Danvile, Illinois.
