Management of Impacted Second Molars

This 60-minute webinar will describe techniques on how to manage impacted second molars, including the use of TADs, exposing impacted second molars and bonding brackets to second molars. There will be an emphasis on surgical uprighting, including indications, contraindications, complications (and management of these complications). Once completed, attendees should have a thorough understanding of the criteria for success and for the management of impacted second molars.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the indications for surgical uprighting and when it will not work.  
  2. Distinguish when to use TADs for uprighting second molars.  
  3. Determine when to expose and bracket with a chain to upright a second molar.

David Cummings, DDS

Dr. David Cummings completed his dental degree and residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at University of Southern California. The following year he completed a fellowship in reconstructive jaw surgery in Santa Barbara, Calif. He is a Diplomate of ABOMS and served as a Board Examiner for seven years. He is part of a group private practice that maintains full scope of OMS. He still enjoys teaching, and he has held a part-time faculty position at USC for the past 20 years. He also is President-Elect of the California Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
