Surgical Exposure Techniques of Impacted Teeth

The management of impacted teeth other than third molars is one of the most challenging and complicated types of dentoalveolar surgery. Proper diagnosis and treatment planning requires interdisciplinary care. Surgical exposure of impacted incisors, canines, bicuspids and second molars is accomplished using various approaches. During this 60-minute webinar, participants will review the surgical techniques used to expose the impacted canine, central incisor, premolar and second molar along with ligation techniques.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the methods for proper diagnosis and treatment planning the treatment of impacted teeth. 
  2. Differentiate whether an open or closed exposure procedure should be performed. 
  3. Provide optimal conditions for the orthodontist to apply the correct forces for alignment. 
  4. Choose the correct bonding position for the intended direction of traction forces.

Pamela L. Alberto, DMD

Dr. Pamela L. Alberto completed her dental degree at the University of Pennsylvania and her residency in oral and maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – University Hospital. Dr. Alberto is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She was formerly the Director of Predoctoral Surgery and the Assistant Dean of Predoctoral Education at New Jersey Dental School.  She is a Fellow of AAOMS, the American Board of Forensic Dentistry and the American Board of Forensic Medicine. She is a Diplomate in the College of Dentistry in the American Association of Integrative Medicine. Dr. Alberto is co-founder of Cheerful Heart Missions that provides dental care for patients in Haiti and Dominican Republic. She maintains a private practice in Sparta and Vernon, N.J.
