Anesthesia Patient Safety Program 2022: A Review of Closed Claims

Utilizing OMSNIC closed case examples, a panel comprised of practicing OMSs and an attorney will illustrate patient safety and risk management principles to help OMS minimize adverse events related to the in-office administration of anesthesia.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain the components used in the patient selection process to determine candidates for in-office administration of anesthesia, including age, physical status/airway assessment, medical and dental history, and medications. 
  2. Discuss emergency management planning and preparedness for the OMS practice team. 
  3. Apply the principles of patient safety and risk management, including the use of equipment and documentation of the patient experience in the clinical setting.

Deepak Krishnan is an American Board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and the chief of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Cincinnati. and Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center. He is an associate professor of Surgery at the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, USA, where he teaches and practices. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Deepak obtained his dental degree from Bangalore University, India and trained in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Emory University’s College of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon completion of the residency, Deepak pursued further fellowship training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery focusing on orthognathic surgery at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada.
Deepak’s clinical interests are in Orthognathic and reconstructive surgery, maxillofacial trauma, pediatric maxillofacial surgery, ambulatory anaesthesia, and clinical research and simulation.
He currently serves on the Committee of Education and Training (CET) of the AAOMS and is the chair of the special committee on Emerging leaders in OMS. He is also a consultant to the AAOMS Committee on Anesthesia (CAN).
He is a past-president of the Ohio State Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the president of the Ohio Dental Society of Anesthesiology. He serves on the examination committee for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is the secretary and treasurer of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ACOMS).

Vincent J. Perciaccante, DDS, FACS

Dr. Perciaccante was born and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He received both his undergraduate and dental school education at New York University, and received his specialty training at Emory University. He continued his education by completing a Fellowship in Facial Aesthetic Surgery. In 2000, Dr. Perciaccante joined the full-time faculty at Emory University School of Medicine and served as the Residency Program Director and Chief of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital thru 2007. He continues on the part-time faculty at Emory as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery and teaches the residents orthognathic surgery work-up and supervises them at Grady Memorial Hospital and the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Dr. Perciaccante is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He has written for several textbooks on Orthognathic Surgery, Temporomandibular Joint Surgery, Dentoalveolar Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery. He is in his fifth year as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery as well as holding the position of Section Editor for the Temporomandibular Disorders and Facial Pain Section and is the junior Chairman of Section II Dr. Perciaccante has served as the President of the Georgia Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery section of the International Association of Dental Research. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and serves on the Committee on Resident Education and Training. Dr. Perciaccante is a consultant to the Georgia Board of Dentistry on Anesthesia. He is a site visitor for the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation, examining Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery resident training programs. Dr. Perciaccante provides general anesthesia for procedures when appropriate. He practices the full scope of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, including wisdom tooth removal and extractions, dental implant placement, maxillofacial pathology and reconstruction, surgery for temporomandibular disorders and facial trauma. Dr. Perciaccante has a particular interest in orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery and facial aesthetic surgery.

Mr. Pizzo is a partner in the Metairie office and has been with the firm since its inception in 1983. His practice consists primarily of healthcare law and professional liability. He has been a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association since 1979. Mr. Pizzo graduated second in his class from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, in 1975. He was then accepted into a fellowship program with the Universities of Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee and received his master’s degree in public administration in 1976. He graduated from Loyola University New Orleans School of Law in 1979 in the top 15 percent of his class. Throughout law school Mr. Pizzo worked as a full-time law clerk for the partners who established Blue Williams..Immediately after he graduated in 1979, Mr. Pizzo began an intense litigation practice. His first jury trial came two weeks after receiving his license to practice. For the next three years, he had full responsibility for a complete general casualty docket involving numerous trials, appellate arguments and mediations. In 1982, he began representing physicians in medical malpractice cases, becoming one of the first outside counsel for Louisiana’s doctor-owned mutual insurance company. At the same time, he began representing dentists in dental malpractice litigation. The focus of his practice continues to be in the area of hospital, physician, dental and professional liability. As an adjunct to his litigation practice, he has also developed a corporate healthcare practice representing physicians, dentists and hospitals in numerous business transactions and corporate matters. Additionally, he is counsel for medical staff and hospitals doing revisions to medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations and policies and procedures. Recently, Mr. Pizzo was appointed as an arbitration judge by a national arbitration organization and conducted several hearings in this capacity. He has been involved in many high-profile cases and has argued successfully to the Supreme Court of the state of Louisiana. He frequently gives lectures and seminars on an array of healthcare issues..
