This program will discuss the perioperative management of patients with certain medical comorbidities. It also will discuss the management of acute perioperative respiratory complications and review the topic of serotonin syndrome. 


Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify and manage acute respiratory complications that may arise in the perioperative period. 
  2. Explain the proper perioperative management of patients with medical comorbidities.
  3. Recognize the symptoms of serotonin syndrome and understand its management.

Dr. Megan Kostibas is an assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and serves as the fellowship director of the Adult Cardiothoracic and Intervention Echocardiography Fellowship. She is a graduate from the University of Texas Long School of Medicine and then completed residency in anesthesiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine along with fellowships in both surgical critical care and cardiothoracic anesthesiology. Her academic and research interests include point-of-care ultrasound, transesophageal echocardiography, extracorporeal and mechanical circulatory support. She serves on the heart transplant/cardiomyopathy listing team as the anesthesiology representative.

Nauder Faraday, MD MPH. Dr. Faraday is Professor of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine, Surgery, and Medicine in the JHU School of Medicine, and Professor of Epidemiology at the JHU Bloomberg School of Public. He has conducted cardiovascular research for more than 30 years, serving continuously as PI, Co-PI, Co-I, and mentor on grants from the NIH, National Science Foundation, Maryland TEDCO, American Heart Association, Anesthesia Societies, and industry sponsors. His research has involved numerous techniques, including in vitro laboratory assays, animal disease models, multi-omics association studies (GWAS, exome chip, and whole genome sequencing approaches), clinical trials, and clinical predictive analytics derived from statistical and machine learning approaches. His research has focused on identifying novel determinants of adverse outcomes after surgery, including myocardial injury, kidney injury, infection, and bleeding, using observational trial designs. More recently, he has conducted studies to improve prediction of hospital readmissions in patients with congestive heart failure, deploying machine learning on the high density physiologic and clinical data inputs from the Electronic Health Record. As PI and Co-I, he has participated in and published results from numerous multi-disciplinary research projects involving scientists with expertise in medicine/biology, statistics, genetics, data science, and engineering. His research expertise in vascular thrombotic diseases (e.g. coronary heart disease, stroke) is complemented by his clinical expertise in cardiovascular anesthesia and critical care medicine, environments in which he continues to practice clinical medicine.

Daniel J. Meara, MS, MD, DMD, MHCDS, FACS is Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery & Hospital Dentistry at Christiana Care Health System in Delaware. In addition, he is director of research, scholarly activity and simulation for the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program.  Prior to joining Christiana Care, he completed a craniomaxillofacial surgery fellowship at West Virginia University/Charleston Area Medical Center.  Prior to that, he completed oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.

Dr. Meara earned a bachelor's degree in economics at the University of Notre Dame. In addition, he has a master's degree in toxicology from Michigan State University, a medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, a dental degree from the University of Alabama and he recently graduated from Dartmouth College with a master’s degree in healthcare delivery science.  Also, Dr. Meara spent research time at the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Meara is board certified and a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS).  He is also a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ACOMS), the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons (AACMFS), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and the International College of Dentists (ICD).  Dr. Meara is a prior recipient of the AAOMS Faculty Educator Development Award and currently serves as chair on the AAOMS Committee on Continuing Education and Professional Development and is the AAOMS commissioner on the ADA Commission on Continuing Education and Provider Recognition.  Dr. Meara is the immediate past president of the Delaware Academy of Medicine and is an executive committee member for the Middle Atlantic Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Edward C. Adlesic received his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine in 1980 and then completed an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1984.

He returned to Pittsburgh and established a private practice in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery that he maintained from 1984 to 2015. During that time, he served as Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital for 18 years and served in the United States Army Reserves from 1988 to 1998 being activated for Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

In 2015, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh as an Assistant Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a dual appointment in the Department of Dental Anesthesiology which he currently maintains. Dr. Adlesic is a Fellow in AAOMS and is the Chair of the Committee on Anesthesia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was on the Oral Examination Committee of ABOMS.

Dr. Adlesic is a Fellow in the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and a Diplomate of the National Board of Dental Anesthesiology. He is a past Director and the current President Elect of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.

Dr Adlesic is a frequent lecturer at AAOMS and ADSA regional and national.
