Best Teaching Practices for Predoctoral Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Education - On Demand Access

With the development of new innovative technologies following the COVID-19 pandemic, predoctoral oral surgery education continues to change. This 60-minute webinar will present various techniques and strategies for interesting predoctoral students in the profession and ensuring they understand how to perform surgery safely. Attendees partook in an interactive discussion on new tactics for educators to implement into their curriculums.

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the concept of the “flipped classroom” and how to incorporate it into a curriculum.
  2. Explain how to use simulation and virtual reality for the recognition and treatment of medical emergencies, extraction of teeth, suturing and the delivery of local anesthesia.
  3. Identify methods of increasing in-class interaction by engaging students.

Ed Braly, DDS

Ed Braly, DDS, was a member of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry’s first graduating class and completed his OMS residency at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He practiced privately in Oklahoma for 35 years before returning to OU College of Dentistry to teach. Dr. Braly has strong interests in facial cosmetic surgery and TMJ surgery. He received Outstanding Faculty Awards in 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2000-01 and 2016-17. Dr. Braly has presented internationally at multiple AAOMS meetings and at the International Federation of Dental Anesthesiology Societies on patient safety and office accreditation.

Richard D’Innocenzo, DMD, MD

Richard D’Innocenzo, DMD, MD, is a Clinical Professor and past Director of Predoctoral Oral Surgery Education at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. He is a fellow of AAOMS and a Diplomate of ABOMS. His clinical interests include anesthesia, implantology, simulation training and predoctoral education.

Rachel Uppgaard, DDS, FACS

Rachel Uppgaard, DDS, FACS, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Uppgaard previously worked in private practice and also served as a staff surgeon at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. She is currently a full-time attending OMS at the University of Minnesota and serves as the Interim School of Dentistry Public Health Liaison. Her interests include TMJ surgery, trauma surgery, orthognathic surgery, pathology, dental implants and severe odontogenic infections. She currently leads research projects on Fanconi anemia, LVADs, odontogenic infections and teaching local anesthesia.
