The Beyond the Basics Coding for OMS online course provides the same content as the in-person Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop. This intermediate-level course concentrates on topics based on the AAOMS Parameters of Care, OMS-specific procedural coding for medical and dental, coding complications and medical record documentation. The comprehensive content provides coding guidance for the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. In addition to existing coding guidance for anesthesia services, bone grafting, fractures, extractions and implants, the course offers insight into coding dentoalveolar procedures such as surgical exposure and uprighting, tissue transfer, incision and drainage (I&D), cleft palate/lip, trauma, debridement and wound repairs. This course also delves into ICD-10-CM coding principles relating to neoplasms, sequelae, complications and Z codes. Instruction also is provided on E/M coding and documentation changes under CPT. Participants will learn 2024 CDT coding updates for computer-aided digital workflow, excisional biopsy and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) along with billing guidance on the expanded Medicare dental benefits and billing for facility-based dental services. Participants need a basic understanding of CDT, CPT and ICD-10-CM to comprehend the content in this course. Completion of the AAOMS Basic Coding for OMS and ICD-10-CM for OMS online courses is highly recommended. Participants have 90 days to complete the course, which is eligible for 13 hours of continuing education credit.
Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrate compliance through appropriate documentation (e.g., use of E/M guidelines) for services provided.
- Review proper diagnosing principles of neoplasms, sequelae and application of 7th characters.
- Examine coding guidelines for anesthesia, applying associated modifiers and other coding trends
- Describe the relationship of coding to third-party payers and its effects on reimbursement.
- Analyze clinical case studies to code OMS-specific procedures for fractures, TMJ, implants, biopsies and more.
This course consists of multiple units. To complete each unit, you will need your printed course manual and current coding books (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II and CDT).

Dawn Jackson is a faculty emeritus of the Health Services Administration program at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). She obtained her master’s degree in allied health education from EKU and a doctorate degree in health services management from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. She is a fellow with the American Health Information Management Association. Jackson’s areas of expertise include healthcare reimbursement systems, coding and billing processes, medical law and healthcare management. A certified coding specialist, she has trained physicians and their staff for more than 30 years and has presented coding courses for AAOMS for over 25 years.
