Common and often undiagnosed, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can have a devastating effect on the health and quality of life of patients. After early detection, comprehensive evaluation and detailed treatment planning can provide much needed surgical care for OSA patients. This session is designed to review standard and novel techniques in the assessment of the airway with an emphasis on imaging and drug-induced sleep endoscopy.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Select and implement imaging modalities required for comprehensive airway evaluation in patients with OSA.
- Provide a comprehensive classification of the airway during a drug-induced sleep endoscopy.
- Perform a clinical examination as it pertains to treatment planning for OSA.

Dr. Covello is a board-certified, fellowship-trained Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Head & Neck Surgical Oncologist, and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgeon. He currently serves as the Program Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Geisinger Health and Assistant Professor at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Wilkes-Barre, PA. A Chicago native, he completed undergraduate and dental school at Marquette University (Milwaukee, WI), medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (New York, NY), Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel - Jacobi Medical Centers (New York, NY), and a fellowship in Head & Neck Oncology with Microvascular Reconstruction at Louisiana State University (Shreveport, LA). His clinical interests include Head & Neck Oncology, Microvascular Reconstruction, Salivary Gland Diseases, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and Craniomaxillofacial Trauma. Dr. Covello is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, American College of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons, and International Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. He holds an ABOMS Certificate of Added Qualification in Head and Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery. He serves on the Board of the Pennsylvania Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
