Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious complication of antiresorptive medications used for treating cancer and metabolic bone diseases. Difficulties in diagnosis, prevention and treatment exist and can lead to providers being hesitant to treat patients on these medications. This 60-minute webinar will discuss current controversies in the management of MRONJ, including review of AAOMS’s Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw – 2022 Update Position Paper. Experts will provide actionable strategies for oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Analyze updates from the 2022 AAOMS MRONJ Position Paper on prevalence and etiology of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.
- Determine available non-opioid alternatives.
- Discuss strategies to prevent MRONJ development in patients with cancer and osteoporosis.
- Examine areas of consensus and controversy in the management of MRONJ.

Dr. Tara Aghaloo is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the UCLA School of Dentistry. She completed her dental training at UMKC, and her oral and maxillofacial surgery residency, MD, and PhD at UCLA. She is a Diplomate of ABOMS, and her clinical practice focuses on bone and soft-tissue regeneration, dental implants and osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ). Dr. Aghaloo is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a past President of the Academy of Osseointegration.

Dr. Ward is the Chalmers J. Lyons Professor, Professor of Dentistry and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Hospital Dentistry at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He earned his dental degree at the University of Southern California and completed his medical degree and postgraduate training, including his residency and fellowship, at the University of Michigan. Dr. Ward is a member of the multidisciplinary Head and Neck Oncology Program at UM and Program Director of the Oral/Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship. He chairs both the AAOMS Committee on Education and Training and the AAOMS Committee on Oral, Head and Neck Oncologic & Reconstructive Surgery. Additionally, he was a member of the 2022 AAOMS Task Force on MRONJ.
