Communication is critical – but many healthcare providers and team members do it poorly. Designed for both OMSs and staff, this session will dissect what makes communication effective versus what makes it harmful by utilizing the presenters’ personal experiences, patient interactions, improvisation, male vs. female communication styles and principles of clinical hypnosis. Concepts to help attendees become more effective with patients, staff, colleagues and on social media will be presented.
*Indicates that this activity is approved by AAOMS for continuing dental education credit ONLY.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Analyze examples of both great and poor communication styles and appreciate their effectiveness.
- Assess which communication style is needed for different situations (e.g., communicating differently in the OR versus a patient consultation).
- Demonstrate mirroring of both verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Examine basic principles of improv to improve their communication effectiveness.
- Describe how principles of clinical hypnosis can and cannot improve patient care.
