This course will describe a practical approach to management of the difficult airway and provide clinical context, pearls and pragmatism to the widely studied difficult airway algorithm. Discussions will include a review the uses of airway adjuncts and office and/or operating room team management. Emphasis will be placed on pre-operative evaluation, preparation and crisis avoidance, and different techniques for the surgical airway will be described and reviewed.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Develop a multidisciplinary plan for the known difficult airway, which includes adjuncts, surgeon assist and the surgical airway.
- Determine how to use airway adjuncts to de-escalate an emergent surgical airway to an urgent surgical airway.
- Explain the steps to performing a surgical airway.

Dr. Cheng earned his medical and dental degrees at the University of California, San Francisco. After completing his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Cheng finished fellowship training in both Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. He is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Cheng’s practice is comprised of Head and Neck Oncology, Head and Neck Reconstruction, Maxillofacial Trauma. His research interests are focused in the areas of Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Cheng currently serves as the Section Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Medical Director of the Legacy Good Samaritan Oral/Head and Neck Cancer Program. He is also an Assistant Professor at the OHSU School of Dentistry in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
When he’s not happily helping patients, Dr. Cheng enjoys spending time with his wife and their two children. When he and his wife are not working, they are constantly looking for child-friendly activities to consume the limitless energy exhibited by their two children.

Dr. Eric Dierks earned his undergrad, dental, and medical degrees at the University of Louisville. He completed OMFS residency at the Christiana Center in Delaware and ENT – Head and Neck Surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. He is board certified in both specialties. He then served five years on the full-time ENT-HNS faculty at UTSW before moving to Portland, Oregon where he joined similarly trained Dr. Bryce Potter to found the Head and Neck Surgical Associates (HNSA).
