This session focuses on infection control and safety in the oral and maxillofacial surgery setting to reduce the risk of infection transmission. When team members are equipped with knowledge and skills, they can prevent breaches in infection control that could lead to serious patient safety risks. Discussion will include current infection prevention strategies for sterilization and disinfection of patient care items, information on how to audit the OMS setting using the CDC checklist and action steps to take when gaps are identified. Attendees will learn how to effectively communicate the findings of an infection control audit to co-workers and supervisors in a manner that is non-confrontational. Checklists and reliable resources will be provided so participants can reinforce best practices in dental infection control per CDC guidelines and promote a culture of safety and compliance. Additionally, safe injection practices will be covered.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Explain infection control concepts and strategies for the OMS setting.
- Locate the most current CDC Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Settings and understand how to be informed of changes and updates to CDC Guidelines.
- Confirm safe injection practices are followed using the One and Only One concept.
- Prevent missteps in the OMS practice by using techniques to communicate errors to co-workers and supervisors.
