Neoadjuvant and perioperative immunotherapy plays an ever-evolving role in the treatment of oral cancer. This 60-minute live webinar will break down the latest research surrounding perioperative immunotherapy, including key insights from the landmark KEYNOTE-689 study, and explain how these findings may influence treatment planning before and after surgery. Attendees will gain practical insight into how neoadjuvant immunotherapy may influence surgical planning, treatment sequencing and postoperative decision-making. The session will explore emerging concepts such as checkpoint and TGF-β targeting agents, perioperative pembrolizumab, cancer vaccines and response assessment as well as how to select the patients most likely to benefit from immunotherapy.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the rationale and key clinical implications of perioperative immunotherapy in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma, including findings from KEYNOTE-689.
- Explain how neoadjuvant immunotherapy may influence surgical planning, pathologic response assessment, adjuvant therapy decisions and long-term outcomes.
- Identify emerging neoadjuvant strategies in oral cancer, including immunoradiotherapy combinations, biomarker-driven treatment personalization and novel immune-based therapeutic platforms.

R. Bryan Bell, DDS, MD, FRCS(Ed), FACS, is the Executive Medical Director of Providence Cancer Institute of Oregon, Director and member of the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute and holds the Walter J. Urba Endowed Chair for Cancer Research in Portland, Ore. In these roles, he oversees oncology services and research teams that deliver care to more than 6,000 cancer patients annually in 32 clinics and eight Oregon hospitals.
Dr. Bell has led pioneering research and clinical efforts to integrate immunotherapy into the neoadjuvant setting.
He has served on the National Cancer Institute Head and Neck Steering Committee’s Immunotherapy Clinical Trials Planning Group and the Task Force on Previously Untreated/Locally Advanced (PULA) Disease.
