Orthognathic surgery plays a critical role in the management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), particularly in patients with craniofacial skeletal deficiencies that are associated with upper airway collapse. This 60-minute live webinar will review how jaw structure can contribute to OSA, highlight patient selection criteria and discuss modern surgical approaches, most notably maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) and genioglossus advancement. Emphasis will be placed on airway-focused treatment planning, integration with sleep medicine/dentistry and evidence-based results, demonstrating how surgical treatment can reduce sleep apnea severity and improve overall quality of life.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Comprehend the relationship between craniofacial skeletal anatomy and upper airway obstruction in patients with OSA, know how to assess a patient with suspected sleep apnea and how to interpret sleep studies.
- Understand current OSA treatment algorithms and identify appropriate candidates and indications for maxillomandibular advancement in orthognathic surgery.
- Describe key surgical techniques such as maxillary expansion and mandibular counterclockwise rotation as well as treatment planning considerations.
- Evaluate the evidence supporting orthognathic surgery outcomes in OSA, including changes in AHI, airway volume and patient-reported quality of life.
