Pain Management in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

OMSs are highly specialized in oral pain management by virtue of their training and experience. Much like the rest of the healthcare community, opioid-free or limited opioid prescription pain management has been trending upward in the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty. However, this trend creates a dilemma when non-opioid pain management is inadequate for pain management. This 60-minute webinar will explore the risks and benefits of opioid and non-opioid pain management as well as alternatives in the pain management armamentarium to consider.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

Identify the risk of use of opioid analgesics even when appropriate.
Determine available non-opioid alternatives.
Discuss contraindication to opioid and non-opioid analgesics.

Dr. Mehran Mehrabi earned a General Surgery Certificate and an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Certificate at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. His professional philosophy focuses on the role of oral health in detection and improvement of various systemic diseases. Dr. Mehrabi served in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi as well as Balad Air Base in Iraq. He now practices in Wisconsin.
