Providing outpatient anesthesia for pediatric patients presents unique challenges. Residency training in pediatric anesthesia may be limited due to complex hospital regulations, making it difficult for non-anesthesiologist providers to maintain and monitor proper pediatric airway patency. Significant anatomical and physiological differences between adult and pediatric patients can lead to inadequate airway management and adverse events. This session will help attendees select the appropriate anesthetic agent for each patient. It will also describe the complications and preparation difficulties associated with outpatient pediatric anesthesia and discuss the identification and management of high-risk pediatric patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Provide safe outpatient anesthesia for the pediatric patient.
  2. Identify various high-risk patients and select appropriate anesthetic techniques to ensure successful pediatric anesthetic outcomes.
  3. Identify various anesthetic complications and manage them appropriately.
