Sinus Pathology and Implications for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

Because problems involving the maxillary sinus and dental disease are often connected, OMSs must be able to recognize how one condition can affect the other. This 60-minute live webinar will cover common sinus pathology linked to odontogenic disease by examining real patient cases. A variety of infections and cysts that may result from or impact odontogenic pathology will be covered. Additionally, the webinar will review CT images for specific sinus pathologies and surgical videos demonstrating sinus and odontogenic pathology to better identify these conditions. After attending, participants will be better prepared to recognize sinus-related issues, make informed treatment decisions and provide effective care for patients with both dental and sinus conditions.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

Identify common pathologic findings using CT in the maxillary sinus.
Understand the relationship between dental and sinus infections.
Discuss management of post-implant sinus infections.
Review opportunities to treat maxillary odontogenic cysts through a transnasal, endoscopic approach.

Steven D. Pletcher, MD, is a Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology and Director of the Residency Program in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Pletcher completed his OHNS residency at UCSF, followed by a rhinology fellowship from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.
Dr. Pletcher’s primary research interests focus on investigation of the role of microbes and host immune response in sinonasal inflammatory disease. He also has specific interests in advancing treatment of sinus disease for adult patients with cystic fibrosis, process improvement in graduate medical education and bettering surgical techniques for chronic sinusitis and refractory epistaxis.
