The Role of Nutrition and Supplements for Healing After Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Nutritional status is an often-overlooked and potentially modifiable factor in surgical outcomes. During this 60-minute webinar, attendees will review evidence connecting diet with alveolar bone metabolism and wound healing, including the effects of micronutrients on bone health, bone grafting, soft-tissue healing, implant osseointegration and immune regulation. Discussion also will cover practical strategies for evaluating and optimizing serum micronutrient levels before surgery to support healing and help improve surgical outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

Identify nutrition as a modifiable patient-related risk factor for implant failure, impaired osseointegration and wound complications, alongside the established risk factors of diabetes, obesity, smoking, alcohol use and osteoporosis.
Describe the roles of key micronutrients such as vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin K2, magnesium, calcium and the B vitamins in bone and soft-tissue health and healing.
Describe the role of macronutrients including carbohydrates, protein and essential fatty acids in bone and soft-tissue health.
Describe ways to correct micronutrient deficiencies.

Teresa G. Biggerstaff, DDS, MD, is the owner of Advanced Oral & Facial Surgery of the Triad in North Carolina. Dr. Biggerstaff serves on the adjunct clinical faculty at the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry. After graduating from the University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry, Dr. Biggerstaff became the fifth woman to graduate from the OMS residency at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She completed a fellowship in facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery at Carolina Surgical Arts in Greensboro, N.C.
