This micro-CE session will bring together thought leaders regarding the history, presentation, pathophysiology, prevention and treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). AAOMS’s MRONJ work group will provide its knowledge and experience regarding this enigmatic disease that traverses the practice of medicine and dentistry. New observations of MRONJ occurring in children will be discussed. Case presentations will conclude the program with treatment recommendations from panel members.

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the options for surgical management of MRONJ of the mandible.
- Discuss the options for surgical management of MRONJ of the maxilla.

Dr. Tara Aghaloo is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the UCLA School of Dentistry. She completed her dental training at UMKC, and her oral and maxillofacial surgery residency, MD, and PhD at UCLA. She is a Diplomate of ABOMS, and her clinical practice focuses on bone and soft-tissue regeneration, dental implants and osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ). Dr. Aghaloo is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a past President of the Academy of Osseointegration.

Dr. Eric Carlson is Professor and Kelly L. Krahwinkel Endowed Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, his fellowship in oral/head and neck tumor surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, and his general surgery residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Dr. Carlson focuses his clinical and research activities on benign and malignant tumor surgery of the head and neck and complications related to cancer therapy.
