Update on Antibiotics and Outcomes of Complicated Odontogenic Infections

Infection management and prevention are routine components of the modern oral and maxillofacial surgeon's practice. This 60-minute live webinar will explore recent updates to the management of complex odontogenic infections, including current guidelines for antibiotic use in these cases. In addition, surgical prophylaxis literature for routine procedures will be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to review their current practices to optimize antibiotic stewardship as well as outcomes for surgical patients.

 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand current guidelines of antibiotic use for simple and complicated odontogenic infections. 
  2. Comprehend the current guidelines on surgical prophylaxis for routine procedures. 
  3. Explain updates in the trends and management of complicated odontogenic infections.

Paul L. Shivers, DMD, MD, is a faculty member in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Hospital Dentistry within the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan Hospitals. Currently, he serves as the Program Director of Oral/Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship within the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He earned his dental and medical degrees and completed OMS residency at Case Western Reserve University. Following residency, he pursued fellowship training in oral/head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery at the University of Michigan.
