Women's Cardiovascular Health: What Can You Do to Maintain Patient Wellness and Safety

Women's cardiovascular physiology and health is different from men's. They may present with different symptomatology, and more females are on hormone replacement therapy. These factors can directly impact the anesthesia given to female patients. This session will review the differences and medications so OMSs can offer optimal care and support to female patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Analyze the unique features of women's cardiovascular health and anesthetic considerations.
  2. Determine how to best screen and assess for cardiovascular symptoms in women.
  3. Explain the impact of menopause and hormone replacement activity on cardiovascular health.
  4. Examine pitfalls from prior case closed scenarios.

Dr. Gangwani is a Diplomate of American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She is an Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry. She is a Program Director of OMS residency program.

Dr. Gangwani earned her Dental Degree from New York University College of Dentistry where she was inducted in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) dental honor society. She completed an Internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She received her Advanced Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center.

She performs dentoalveolar surgery, complex bone grafting procedures, full arch implant reconstruction, corrective jaw surgery, TMJ surgery, reconstructive surgery after facial trauma.

Dr. Gangwani spends a great deal of time educating her patients and providing treatment options, thus helping them make informed decisions about their own health. She is passionate about delivering personalized patient care before, during and after surgery.

Dr. Gangwani also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health Epidemiology from the University of North Texas Health Science Center. She has a particular interest in clinical research and has served as an author of several book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals. She enjoys educating residents and finds it extremely rewarding.

Dr. Sheffield received her Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University, and her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She completed her residency and internship in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

After private practice in Southeast Iowa and serving as an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa, Dr. Sheffield joined Quincy Medical Group in 2018, a large multi-specialty physicians group in Western Illinois. Passionate about advocating for and supporting women and minorities in our great specialty and the impact of improper antibiotic use in our practices and our communities at large, you may recognize Dr. Sheffield as a returning speaker at the AAOMS Annual Meeting or at other conferences and educational events. She loves interacting with the public and other providers on social media and as a guest podcaster.

When Dr. Sheffield isn’t working, she loves spending time with her three young children and her husband. She volunteers as a member of the QMG Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, Ambulatory Care Surgery Committee, and is the president of the Quincy Montessori School Board. She played lacrosse in college and dental school and was a certified SCUBA instructor in another life. She enjoys piano, fitness, and working on her 130 year old historic home. As a native Utahn, she misses the mountains but has embraced Midwest living -- even though her Iowa husband is just now teaching her to ski in middle age!

Dr. Cynthia Trentacosti, D.D.S. M.S. has provided Oral and Maxillofacial care in southeast Pennsylvania since 1994. She earned her undergraduate degree in biology at Ursinus College and her dental degree at the Medical College of Virginia. She received her training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at The Ohio State University , at which time she also earned a masters in science. Dr. Trentacosti is board certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1996 and re-certifies with this board every year. She is also certified by the National Board of Dental Anesthesia.

Dr. Trentacosti is active in local and regional oral and maxillofacial surgery societies. She has served as president of both the Delaware Valley Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Pennsylvania Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as past Chairperson of the government affairs committee for AAOMS .She has served as a Board Director for OMSNIC since 2021 and currently serves as Chairperson of OMSNIC Patient Safety and Risk Management Committee.

Dr. Trentacosti’s special interest in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery include adult and pediatric anesthesia. Due to this interest, she has been an active participant in developing and maintaining statewide guidelines and office evaluations for anesthesia services provided by oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the state of Pennsylvania.
